Attrition

In_Faction: Attrition's early style was more "electronic" than your newer "classical" oriented material. Because Attrition has always been associated with the industrial/experimental scene, do you feel that this categorization is appropriate?

Martin Bowes: our new material is a mix of electronic and acoustic instruments...it actually always has been...to various extents...even the almost total electronic albums often used samples of acoustic instruments...with ETUDe we experimented with classical interpretations of our earlier works...it is NOT our new direction!...we have been associated with lots of scenes from industrial to experimental to gothic,....whatever...it doesn't affect the music!....

IF: During May you toured Germany with In The Nursery. Was there a good response from the crowds, and were the shows successful?

MB: YES.YES. of course the main crowd was there to see In THE NURSERy who have a larger following than us in Germany at the moment...but we had some very successful shows...one or two disasters...and went on to headline some european festivals later in the summer...

IF: You are very versatile in your music. Do you find it easier to perform using live instruments or electronics?

MB: I personally cannot play anything other than electronic based instruments...(well I can make a noise with a guitar...sometimes all I need!)...i use my whole studio as an instrument....get people to come in...julia on vocals...Franck on Viola perhaps...and sample what they do...so even they could be seen as instruments to me...i find anything capable of making a sound useful in creating music....

IF: Attrition was founded in the early 80's, and it obviously takes alot for a band to retain it's standing for such a long time. What do you feel have been your strong points , and do you have any weaknesses? Are there any songs you're particularly attached to or unhappy with?

MB: ATTRITION was originally more a collection of ideas, of idealists...pushed on by me...gradually it became me alone as a driving force...i took control in many ways...composing...recording (building our own studio...the cage...)...management...I have invested a lot into my work...so it has had it's ups and downs ...bad business deals...as any band or business would...it's part of life...you need these to learn and to survive....SONGS...i rarely listen to them...i'm too involved with the new ones...although I compiled a "best of" recently so i had to listen to older material...I was pleasantly surprised...

IF: What have been your major influences in creating music, and what are some of your favorite bands?

MB:I was originally a visual artist...I SEE music...probably why i am much more a producer than a musician...i am as much influenced by artists or writers or film makers as musicians in making my music...as for musicians...it is so many or so few that influence me now...but some of my all time favourites have been...Kraftwerk, early Roxy Music with Eno), Velvets, Doors, Joy Division, Magazine, Sex Pistols, Wire, 50's rock n roll, Beethoven, Mozart...early Bob Dylan....oh lots of things i probably shouldn't like...!

IF: Do you feel that any other bands have been influenced by your style?

MB: I do...some tell us...it's nice to know....

IF: Often, bands that have maintained a long standing find their earlier material to be embarrassing or even undesirable. Do you find this to be the case with Attrition?

MB: Not really...I find good tracks on all our albums when i actually hear them...I would never write off such a large part of my life... although it is just that...an album of snapshots which says more about you in that period than a photo album can...I guess most people don't reveal so much to the public!...

IF: Are there any upcoming projects planned? Can you give us any insight into the future of Attrition?

MB: I have so much going on...too many things...we have just finished a new album..."The Jeopardy Maze"...out on Projekt in february...we plan to tour the USA again in march/april to support it...we also have an album of remixes planned for late next year...there are other "rare" releases planned....a limited edition 7" on austrian label SYNTACTIC...and I am working with other people on yet to be revealed side-projects...remix work....
